Useful Resources
Lots of people ask me about where they can find good project management resources online. The trouble is, there are loads of websites dedicated to project managers, but many of them are just advertising, or are not up-to-date, or don’t contain enough content to be useful. Here are a selection of my favourite sites that will help you be a better project manager (links open in a new window).
Podcasts
- The PM Podcast: Cornelius Fichtner’s podcast.
- The pm411.org Project Management Podcast: Ron Holohan’s podcast site. Not every entry is a podcast but you’ll find something interesting each time.
Online communities
- International Community for Project Managers (ICPM): there is plenty of content you can access without logging in, but if you want to actively contribute to the community you’ll need to sign up.
- Project Connections: has a good template directory.
- Gantthead: loads of great articles and you can join special interest groups.
Magazines
- Projects@Work: useful magazine with practical advice from industry experts (including me!).
- PM Network: magazine from PMI, some articles from each issue available to download as .pdf files.
- Baseline: technology project management magazine.
- Computer Weekly: there is a good blog on project management and lots of other stuff for technology PMs.
- PM World Today: regularly updated news from around the world.
Project Management know-how
- Project Perfect White Paper directory: Neville Turbit has put together a useful directory of articles covering all aspects of PM.
- ITWeb: a South African portal for project management news, but also contains has a useful Q&A section.
- PMConnection: their newsletter page has a useful list of upcoming project management events and a summary of recent articles from blogs and other websites about project management.
- PreparePM.com is a fab source of information and practice questions if you are working towards PMP certification.
- PMToolbox aggregates blogs and other information into one place. Il y a une version en français aussi.
- PMHut has a selection of excellent authors covering a range of project management topics, it lists trainers (cleverly picking the ones closest to you first) and has a jobs section. Beginners should start at the project management primer.
- Project Smart: lots of articles, and active forums.
Professional bodies
- Project Management Institute (PMI)
- Association for Project Management, mainly a UK group. I don’t find their website very easy to use but there is some interesting news for members. There is a sub-page for their Women in Project Management special interest group.
- The APMG also has a site dedicated to those who have taken exams through them. You need your exam details to enter, but once you are in, it is full of useful stuff.
- PRINCE2: OK, it’s not a professional body, but it’s a standard.
- The British Computer Society have a project management specialist group.
