PMI Global Congress EMEA was attended by 808 people from 54 countries. The countries that sent the most delegates were the United States (weird for a European event, but someone I spoke to said it was a good networking opportunity), the U.K., Ireland, Italy and Germany. I also met people from the U.A.E., Nigeria, Kuwait, and Romania.

Today, 35% of PMI members are based outside North America, according to Beth Partleton, this year’s Chair of PMI’s Board of Directors, although you don’t have to be a PMI member to attend Congress.

Since I got back from Dublin I’ve been writing about my experiences at the Congress, as have other people. Here is a round up of what you might have missed.

Video diary

My video diary of Day 1, with my first impressions

Learn PMP on your iPhone

Once you have the app downloaded, you can even use it when you are out of range of a phone signal, which means it will work on the tube.

Tom’s Planner

A new scheduling tool with ‘drag and drop simplicity’ has launched. Tom’s Planner seems to have got pretty good reviews, including one from Mashable, although I haven’t yet checked it out myself in any detail. I do like how it looks though – I just hope it has enough features to do an adequate job. Once I’ve had a chance to properly investigate I will let you know.

New Partnership: Intacct and Clarizen

Intacct and <a title="Clarizen" href="http://www.clarizen.com/?source=referral&medium=web&campaignID=PM4Girls&utm_source=referral&utm_
medium=web&utm_campaign=PM4Girls” target=”_blank”> Clarizen have announced a new partnership to deliver an integrated, end-to-end solution for professional services and project-based businesses. Under this new agreement, the companies will integrate Clarizen’s cloud computing-based project management application with the Intacct cloud-based financial management system and Intacct’s new Project Accounting application. They believe this will create a ‘best of breed’ combination that will “optimise the entire service delivery lifecycle, allowing service employees to initiate, track, and manage the delivery of their projects in Clarizen, while the finance organization leverages Intacct to manage the financial implications of service delivery.” It sounds complicated to me, but we’ll see how it turns out! It could be a very good move, and it certainly will position Clarizen in a good place in the market.

Free webinars

Systemation has a series of free webinars, and the upcoming topics are business process management, project communication and Agile. Anything there appeal to you? You can also look through their back catalogue of archived webinars too.

OK, Systemation isn’t a software company (they do training) but I thought you’d like to hear about the webinars anyway.

This time last year: Recovering troubled programmes. The 5-step approach to recovering a programme and its constituent projects.

This time in 2007: Helicopter project management. Zooming in and then pulling back to see the big picture.

This time in 2006: The sad state of Gypsy Moth IV. The role of regular status reporting.

If you subscribe by RSS and got an email over the weekend with a ‘Hello World’ post, I’m sorry about that. I had a problem with a corrupt database file that resulted in having to restore the blog from backup, and that post was automatically (and accidentally) generated during the restore.

Welcome to the April/May 2010 edition of carnival of project management. I’m a bit behind – you should have had this on Monday, but it was a bank holiday here.

My favourite submission this time comes from Elyse Nielsen: Balancing the Constraints posted at Anticlue, saying, “One of the key components is to exploit the constraints to achieve the desired benefits. This post provides a process to do that using the Theory of Constraints.”

Gilda Bonanno presents Public Speaking – What’s Your Point? posted at Gilda Bonanno’s blog, saying, “Public Speaking is an essential success skill for any project manager. If you are an expert, but can’t communicate that expertise, you will hit a roadblock in your careers success. This post provides tips to ensure that the point of your presentation is clear to your audience, whether you’re presenting to your project team, executive sponsor or potential customers.”

ioventuresinc.com presents Command and Control Management posted at HR Blog | A Human Resource Blog from BambooHR, saying, “A look at micromanagement and how it effects productivity. The command and control management system may not be the best way to get the most out of your employees.”

Geoff Crane presents I Second That Emotion posted at Papercut Edge, saying, “Hi there! I write about project management; specifically the human side of it. I came across Blog Carnival and thought this might be something of value to you. Cheers! Geoff. ” Thanks, Geoff!

CMOE presents Leadership by Leading posted at Teamwork, saying, “Being a Leader: “Leadership is the ability to decide what is to be done, and then get others to want to do it.” -Dwight D. Eisenhower”

SpiKe presents Does Work/Life Balance Really Exist? posted at Part-Time Wage Slave. I don’t find the arguments in this post particularly clear, but work/life balance is a topic worth discussing further.

Utpal Vaishnav presents A Path-Goal Based Approach That May Take Your Project Leadership Repertoire To The Next Level posted at Utpal Vaishnav.

And finally, here are two links that I have picked out for you:

A video on YouTube from Cheetah Learning about getting your project management qualifications, and is quite funny. Although I’m sure there is more to becoming rich than just taking a course.

And an article on the PMI website, about how to position yourself as an expert, including some advice from me!

That concludes this edition.
