Project management was poorly represented in the awards (we didn’t have our own category this year) but I’m delighted to say that Kelly’s Contemplation, another PM blog, was runner up in the best new blog category. I also had the opportunity to meet up with Jon Hyde, the fantastic blogger behind Public Sector PM.

The social media champion award went to green IT expert Kate Craig-Wood from Memset, a cloud computing company.

Here’s a short video of the event.

It’s the 4th Annual Computer Weekly Social Media Awards, and I am delighted to say that this year I have been nominated in two categories: Best Use of Social Media – Individual (under my name, Elizabeth Harrin) and IT Professional Blogger of the Year (for A Girl’s Guide to Project Management).

There isn’t a project management category this year, so project management blogs have been scattered throughout the categories, and project managers are poorly represented (women are poorly represented, too). Here are the other project management blogs up for awards:

Kelly’s Contemplation (my rival in the IT Professional Blogger category, and Robert Kelly is also nominated in the Best New Blog category)

Public Sector PM (Best New Blog category)

The Not-For-Profit category has some interesting examples of social media use that have been delivered as projects.

Voting closes on 25 November, so please cast your vote soon. Of course, you don’t have to vote for me (although that would be nice!) but please do take part and let’s try to make this the best Social Media Awards yet.

Thanks very much!

A Girl’s Guide to Project Management celebrates project management literature and writing in all forms. You’ll find project management book reviews, interviews with authors (like this one, and this one) and project management writing is what my company does.

So it was a great honour to be invited to join the winners of the PMI David I. Cleland Project Management Literature Award at their table at the awards event on Saturday.

The award went to Dave Shirley and Rich Maltzman, authors of Green Project Management (read my review of that book here). Rich wasn’t able to attend, but Dave took to the stage to collect their elegant glass trophy. When he got back to the table, I asked how he felt.

“It feels awesome, to use a cliché,” said Dave. “It didn’t really sink in until tonight and I saw the ‘pomp and circumstance’ surrounding the awards, and hearing the accomplishments of other award winners. It was humbling and I’m sure that Rich will agree as to how grateful were to have received this award. Also, the icing on the cake was to get my picture taken with Dr. Cleland while holding the award.”

They seem to have started something, with their focus on sustainability and ‘green’. “Since we’ve written the book, we’ve seen other books on the subject coming out,” Dave added. “We feel it’s very important that PMI has recognized (from a list of outstanding project management nominations) a book on the intersection of sustainability and project management. We hope this draws more attention to this increasingly important aspect of projects and helps Project Managers recognize their increasingly important role in this area.”

He hinted at another project in the pipeline but wasn’t able to share more than that. Watch this space…

I attended the Computer Weekly IT Blog Awards last night, as I’d been nominated in the Project Management category. And…

I won!

I also won the Blog of the Year award, selected by the judges and IBM who were the sponsor, and I was runner up in the IT Professional Female category, which was won by the wonderful Basheera Khan. Derek Huether’s great blog The Critical Path was the runner up in the Project Management category.

All the results are on the Computer Weekly website, along with the presentation and photos, including much better photos of the event at Delfina than this one of me. Check out @swanny in her posh frock, picking up the award for best Gadget blog. Watch out for the video coming soon, which features me slightly drunk bumbling about being so excited and happy to have won a lovely iPad.

I couldn’t have done it if it wasn’t for all your votes, so thank you very much for your support over the last 12 months, and especially for voting for me over the last month. I’m so pleased to have won – it really means a lot to know that people appreciate this blog and what I aim to do here.

The awards this year had a charity angle, supporting Computers for Schools in Kenya. They raised enough money to almost kit out an entire classroom with refurbished PCs, and if you’d like to donate there is still time to do so at the Just Giving page.

Right, now I’m off to play with my new iPad!

**Update 20/11/10** One of the IBM’ers present, Karl, took a video of my accepting my award which you can watch here. It was great to have the opportunity to watch it back, because on the night it all seemed to happen so quickly.
