Book review: Project Management Interview Questions Made Easy

Project Management Interview Questions Made EasyStructured around 7 steps to a successful interview, Project Management Interview Questions Made Easyby Dr Andrew Makar is about more than the interview questions themselves. It is a whole guide to getting a new job.

It’s a short book which makes it easy to read and it is written in a very relaxed, helpful style. Andy doesn’t profess to be a professional recruiter or someone who works in executive search. Instead, he draws on his experience both recruiting candidates and being a candidate, as well as advice and tips given by other business leaders who have recruited project managers.

Get yourself ready to apply

The first stage of getting a new job is getting yourself ready to apply. That includes sorting out your profile, and making sure that you present yourself in the best possible light. Prepare or revise your CV and make sure that it uses the right keywords. This will help recruiters who are scanning your CV, and possibly hundreds of other CVs. Make it easy for them to see that you fit the bill for a project management job. Andy also advises readers to keep their CVs short as this also makes them easier to scan and digest.

Tidy up your social media profiles too. Make sure that you don’t have anything publicly available online that you would be worried about a potential employer seeing. It’s relatively easy to take off incriminating photographs so take a bit of time to check through your profiles, ensuring that they are up-to-date, relevant and professional.

The book includes worked examples such as a sample elevator speech and some headings to use on your CV that cover the major points recruiters would expect to see.

Finding a job

The book also includes a section on how to find a job once you are ready to put yourself out there. Some of this advice is very timely, such as the best websites to use. Some of the websites and social networks quoted may well not be the top ones to use in the future. Unfortunately this will make the book dated in a couple of years (or less) unless Andy publishes a new version.

The interview questions

The part of the book that covers interview questions looks at key scenarios you could face during an interview. It also, and this is really helpful, explains why the question is being asked. This gives you an insight into what the interviewer is looking for and the kind of answer that they might be expecting. Keep that in mind while preparing your answers.

The author reminds readers that you are interviewing the company as much as they are interviewing you. Why do you want to work there? Remember that taking a new job is a big step and you want to make sure that you make the right decision and take a great position in a great company.

The final section includes comments and interview questions used by real hiring managers, and what they look for in candidates. This is a good insight into what recruiters today are looking for, but in my opinion you should bear in mind that every interviewer will be different and that what is important to someone in one company may not be as relevant to someone else.

Overall, this book is a useful confidence boost if you haven’t had much interview practice recently. You’ll read it in a few hours and feel more prepared for facing the job market.
