A friend and I went to Kenwood House recently to see a photo exhibition. We had arrived separately by bus and tube and felt very much like we were in London. Until we walked on to Hampstead Heath.
Laid out below us was London: the Swiss Re building, the Eye, Telecom Tower, St Paul’s, the ever-present cranes.

It made me feel rather insignificant, seeing the buildings I walk past every day laid out as the iconic skyline. When you are in the shadow of St Paul’s you don’t have the same perspective.
Every so often it is good to get a different perspective on things: and that is a key skill for project managers. You have to be able to pull back and see the helicopter view. It helps establish where you are needed and where things are going to plan. Having the big picture helps prioritise and also keep you sane when things are going wrong.
I hadn’t expected to find a project management lesson on the Heath, but I’m very glad I did.
