Carnival of Project Management #26

by Elizabeth on 7/05/2009

Welcome to the April 30, 2009 edition of carnival of project management.  I sifted through 76 lovely entries to pick out the best for your enjoyment.  Can you believe we are now on number 26?

Eric Klen presents How to End Organizational Chicken Games posted at Dharma Consulting. This made me smile.

Willb presents When its all just too much – Be Negative posted at William Bakhos’s Blog. Although this has been in a couple of Carnivals it’s thought-provoking and I do it: I just didn’t realise that slobbing around was part of a constructive effort to recharge my batteries. Where is that block of chocolate?

Alec Satin presents 5 Antidotes to Gloom posted at Making Project Management Better, saying, “Received a lot of positive feedback for this post. Perhaps others might enjoy as well.” Yes, Alec, I’m sure they will. Shake off that gloom! But what’s with the llama picture?

GreatManagement presents 99% Of All Managers Know The Basics Of Management But posted at GreatManagement Blog, saying, “I believe 99% of Managers know the basics of Management but only a small percentage actually do it.” This is a good summary of what we should be doing as project managers, even if all the rhetorical questions were annoying! Get past that bit and the rest is good.

Britannica Blog presents Business Writing Quizzes: How Well Can You Do? posted at Britannica Blog, saying, “Somebody said “Sloppy writing reflects (and advertises) sloppy thinking.” I guess the corollary would be that “Careful, clear writing reflects (and advertises) clear thinking.”” I haven’t taken these quizzes but I might do, just to see how wrong they are for British English. My favourite source of writing advice is Grammar Girl, who is brilliant.

Rich Maltzman, PMP presents Form a line for this book! posted at Scope crêpe.  Other people get excited by forms too, we just don’t admit it!!

Simon Stapleton presents Should You Take a Lower-Level Job? posted at Career & Personal Development for CIOs, Technical Professionals and Self-Professed Geeks, saying, “This is a burning question on the lips of many IT people who are out of work, or want to move on from a dead-end job. Should you take a role that you consider beneath your abilities and talents to get into the workplace again to put food on your plate?” An interesting question, relevant to PMs too.

Shawn M. Driscoll presents Making Peace With Time posted at Shawn Driscoll. Oh, if only I lived by these rules. There is never enough time. Or should that be, there is too much I want to achieve and I’m rubbish at prioritising.

Burak Bilgin presents How to Resolve Conflicts Effectively posted at Distiller’s Corner, saying, “We usually choose between two options when we try to solve conflicts: the aggressive and the lazy option. However there is a third option beyond these, considered by few people, but much more effective than the previous two.” Not a deep analysis of conflict management, and there is a much better explanation in Making Things Happen (Scott Berkun) but a good reminder that we should be doing conflict management and not walking away from it.

** Carnival Extra **

These weren’t submitted but I’ve found them interesting and wanted to share them.

How to Manage Projects with Basecamp at Geek Girls Guide.  This is a great blog, I’m really pleased to have found it.  On top of that, it’s one of the most attractive blogs I have seen for a long time, it’s a lovely layout.

Why programmes are perceived to succeed or fail on the BCS site.  It’s not strictly speaking a blog but it is an interesting piece.

That concludes this edition. Submit your blog article to the next edition of carnival of project management using our carnival submission form. Past posts and future hosts can be found on our blog carnival index page.

Some of these summaries are cut off a little early. Was that intended?
