When I heard from Sarah Chidgey that BCS was organising a careers event for women in IT I was a bit worried it would end up being like the QS Women in Leadership Forum. I registered for one of the QS forums, only to find out that it was going to be like a big graduate recruitment fair, but with the scrabbling for free pens and uninteresting speakers being in a women-only environment. In the end I didn’t go, so I don’t know what it would have been like on the day.
Fortunately, W-Tech doesn’t look like that at all. For one thing, it’s website is a million times better, and it is supported not only by BCS but also by the fabulous womenintechnology.co.uk, and if Maggie Berry is involved you know the event is going to be worth attending. On top of that, it’s not just a recruitment fair. Yes, there will be employers present, but it is also billed as a networking event with the opportunity to meet professionals from all areas and levels of the industry and find out about training programmes, personal development and the latest technology trends.
W-Tech is happening on Tuesday 3 February 2009, at Savoy Place, London. It’s also happening at sensible times to fit around people who are already working, so the event kicks off at 11am. I think the main attraction is going to be the evening part which starts at 6pm and includes a panel of speakers already working in the industry, and concludes with a champagne and canapé reception at 8.30pm! If free champagne isn’t a lure to fill the hall then I’m not sure what is.
I have registered and if the timings work out I hope to attend the session on managing my online profile to get some tips about LinkedIn. W-Tech has its own LinkedIn group, and a presence on Facebook, so the Social Media Exec at BCS has obviously been busy!
