Yes, of course you are right! I've been to another event since, where I was happier to work the room - more on that next week. It just takes practice to be comfortable at it, I suppose.
As for ITIL, I can't expect to learn everything in just an evening. Thanks for the link to your blog - I'll stop by to get a better and broader understanding.

I think there are a number of the reasons that ITIL and PRINCE2 tend to get mentioned together a lot. To name but a few:
1. When you introduce ITIL to an organisation it is recommended that this is done as a formal project, using a project methodology, e.g. PRINCE2.
2. They both about governance.
3. They both came out of government departments and have had success in the private sector as well.
4. Both are now accredited by the APMG.

As an aside, if you didn't manage to pick up a free copy of the v3 little ITIL book you can download it from the itSMF website. http://www.itsmf.com/news/news.asp?NewsID=334

If you have any questions on ITIL do stop by my blog or drop me an e-mail and I'll do my best to answer them.

As for the networking, I find it varies with the BCS events depending upon who turns up. Points for forcing yourself to go to more events. Extra bonus points next time if you force yourself to talk to the guy sitting by himself who you think is most comfortable in a server room. Chances are, he really wants someone to strike up a conversation but he isn't going to / doesn't know how to make the first move :)

MEMO TO SELF: Take own advice more often!
