Carnival of project management #11

by Elizabeth on 30/07/2007

Welcome to the July 30, 2007 edition of carnival of project management.

Pawel Brodzinski presents Brainstorming Meetings More Effective posted at Software Project Management, saying, “Several advices how to achieve better outcome from brainstorming.”

Matt Hanson presents Matt’s Creative Advertising Blog » Blog Archive » Building Visibility with Promotional Umbrellas posted at Matt’s Creative Advertising Blog, saying, “One of the most clever marketing gimmicks that Ive seen recently was one used by a retailer in a little shore town well-known for its rainy days.” I thought this was quite a good idea for product launches, or for big projects that need some kind of publicity.

Chris Russell presents Turning Coal into Diamonds: A Case Study on Customer Complaint Tracking posted at Productivity Planner, saying, “In order to reach the goal of fully utilizing customer feedback, a more comprehensive system for managing customer complaints is needed.” It reads like a press release, but I’m interested in what other companies are doing, and things with ‘Six Sigma’ in tend to get my attention, so I’m including it.

Mike Ramm presents Classic Mistakes – GigaLease Case Study, Part 1 posted at Stop and think!, saying, “Classic mistakes in software development.” Now this is a case study written up interestingly. I think there is a great deal of value in sharing project failures as well as successes, so thanks for this Mike.

Mike Ramm presents Classic Mistakes – GigaLease Case Study, Part 2 posted at Stop and think!, saying, “Classic mistakes in software project management”

Shamelle presents I do (But…. I don’t): Decide To Be Decisive posted at Enhance Life. This is a prompt to bear in mind when you are under pressure to make decisions quickly.

CraigBrown presents The V-Model posted at Better Projects, saying, “The V model is an expansion of the software development lifecycle with a focus on validation and testing. Learn more about this aspect of the development process and be a better project manager.” Someone was talking to me about the V-Model recently and I nodded as if I knew all about it, so I found this interesting.

Thomas Cutting, PMP presents June 27, 2007 – Authorized to Manage – Introduction posted at Cutting’s Edge Project Management, saying, “This entry is actually the first in an 8 part series on Authority that covers Positional, Referent, Reward/Penalty and Expert authority from a PM perspective. It looks at appropriate uses, abuses and challenges to each. The last couple entries in the series offers practical advice on how to use these authority types in both a Matrix and Projectized organization.” Good old Thomas. How could I not include this?

Alexandra Levit presents 5 Steps for Coping with Criticism posted at Water Cooler Wisdom. While this isn’t purely about project management, it’s relevant to the workplace.

Jimson Lee presents How to build a winning team posted at Speedendurance.com, saying, “Successful PMs start with building the right team. 7 things to look for when building your team. A must read for any Manager!” While I think Jimson’s slightly over-selling himself by saying this is a ‘must read’ (one of the tips for a winning team is choosing the right people…), overall I think this site is interesting as it’s not often you get sport linked with project management.

Atlantic Canada’s small business blog submitted a piece more relevant to the Carnival of Business Analysts, but I had a hunt on their site and they do have some stuff relevant to project managers. I particularly enjoyed this post about not blaming the project manger.

That concludes this edition. Submit your blog article to the next edition of carnival of project management using our carnival submission form. Past posts and future hosts can be found on our blog carnival index page.

I’ve updated this edition of the carnival today to take out an article that had been submitted by a splogger. It had been posted with the proper citation, meaning Sue Massey was taking the credit for Mike McFadden’s work. The original article appears here: http://ezinearticles.com/?Leadership-Managing-Time-For-Maximum-Profit&id=641230
