Carnival of project management #8

by Elizabeth on 23/04/2007

Welcome to the April 23, 2007 edition of carnival of project management, our monthly round-up of PM news and views.

First up, Syd presents An effective way to solve problems posted at Improve your life with simple tips, saying, “An effective way of solving any kind of problem is by writing it down.”

Laura Ricci has How are you like a Utility Company? posted at Laura’s Winning Ideas, saying, “Managers evaluate which decisions are on the critical path, and therefore need more care in evaluating change than decisions outside the critical path. This post is about a client bringing new technology to a Utility Company.” Her definition of critical path is one that I don’t necessarily agree with, but I can understand different groups use vocabulary to mean different things, and it seems to work for her.

Pawel Brodzinski presents a handy reminder for project communications: The Best Way of Contact posted at Software Project Management, saying, “Project management work is all about contacting different people. There are a list of ways you can do that: mails, calls, formal documents… Which one is the best and when?”

Ybother presents 10 Ways to Improve your Marketing Presentation posted at TodaysTen.com: Daily Top Ten List to jumpstart your knowledge, saying, “Presentations should be eye catching and have as little text as possible. This article shows you 10 simple to make graphics which spruce up your presentation in less than 5 minutes.” Good for steering group reports and other project presentations.

Sagar Satapathy presents 101 Bonehead Mistakes Every Manager Should Avoid posted at Business Intelligence Lowdown. Quite a long article, but worth printing out to refer to every now and then!

Pushpa Sathish presents Doing Business in India: 20 Cultural Norms You Need to Know posted at Business Intelligence Lowdown. I found this useful, especially as we work with India a lot.

Murad Ali presents Credibility in the Workplace: A not so simple formula. posted at The New Business World.

Thomas Cutting, PMP presents Cutting’s Edge Project Management: Testing Done Right posted at Cutting’s Edge Project Management, saying, “My team recently had a small part to play in a huge implementation. There were something like 23 interfaces with other departments and outside organizations, thousands of modules and the actual implementation took nearly 48 hours. The simple reason for our success was testing. Since all projects go through testing phases, what was special about the testing for this project? Here are 7 reasons.”

Dave Prouhet presents Software Development Project posted at Business Advice Daily, saying, “Did you know that less than one-third of all information technology projects succeed? About half are overdue and/or over budget, often with fewer features than originally planned. The rest? Complete failures, either never finished or never used. Here are 5 key concepts to keep in mind when developing software for your company.”

That concludes this edition. Until next time!
