Blogs and budgets

by Elizabeth on 13/03/2006

So the ITtoolbox blog awards for 2006 have been announced, and none of the winners are from their project management category. Perhaps I shouldn’t be surprised, given that they claim to have over 157k blogs and gave out just 6 prizes. Or maybe the people who vote in the awards are more technical than project management-orientated, leading to a neat skew of the results away from our unsung discipline.

It was a short week last week for me, as I was out of the office for Thursday and Friday, so a pile of emails informing me of the lack of advancement on my projects awaited my return this morning. Fortunately, one of the sticky budget questions has been resolved. There seems to be very little written about budget management for projects: a quick trawl through Amazon, and Gower and Wiley catalogues results in pretty much nothing. If you want a brief summary of management accounting, details on how to submit a well-written grant or information on US financial management, there are books out there for you, but unfortunately PM’s are left with odd chapters tucked at the back of books. Although I can’t talk, as my book has the same approach. Maybe my next one will consider all the budget tips I’ve learnt over the years and present them in one handy volume. We’ll see.
